What is Hepcinat?
Hepcinat containing the active ingredient sofosbuvir is a nucleotide polymerase inhibitor type of antiviral medication used to treat Hepatitis C. The medication must be used in combination with other antiviral medicines to reduce the amount of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the body to help the liver recover. Chronic hepatitis C infections can cause serious liver problems such as liver cancer or cirrhosis (scarring). Patients with HIV or liver cancer and are going to have a liver transplant may also use the drug to decrease the risk of reinfection after the transplant.
How is Hepcinat used?
Hepcinat is an orally administered medication taken once per day unless otherwise directed by a doctor. The tablets can be taken with or without food but should be taken at the same time each day. Contact a doctor for the correct dosage and length of treatment as it will depend on the patient’s condition and their response to the therapy. The usual length of treatment is usually between 12 to 24 weeks. Do not stop taking other antiviral medications unless otherwise told to do so by a doctor.
Patients using Hepcinat may encounter unwanted side effects such as:
· Loss of appetite
· Lower back or side pain
Contact a doctor immediately should side effects persist or if you encounter more severe side effects such as:
· Pale skin
· Mental or mood changes
· Excessive fatigue
· Signs of new infection
· Changes in behavior
· Irregular heartbeat
· Trouble breathing
Do not use Hepcinat if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is also not advised for men to use this medication while having unprotected sex as this may also lead to birth defects.
Immediately proceed to your nearest emergency department if you suffer an allergic reaction. Symptoms usually associated with such a reaction include difficulty breathing or swallowing, chest tightness, swelling, skin rashes, and hives.
Hepcinat is not always suitable for all patients. Always consult your health care provider prior to using this medication if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, trying to conceive, using any other medication (prescription or non-prescription), using any herbal products or supplements, or if you have any allergies or other health problems.
